Summary
  • Today’s שיעור learns מסכת חולין דף ק"י beginning with *ki salik R' Elazar*, where ר' אלעזר investigates how רב could prohibit roasting כחל without cutting it open despite a ברייתא permitting it, and the גמרא offers two explanations: either רב instituted a local גדר because of negligence in בשר בחלב, or רב’s prohibition originates in a teaching about כחל של מניקה that became generalized through רב חייא’s formulation. A later episode contrasts practice in סורא, where they do not eat כחל, with פומבדיתא, where they do, and a story about רמי בר תמרי in סורא brings out issues of מנהג המקום, תחום, roasting with grape pits and related איסורי הנאה and גזל, and exemptions from תפילין and ציצית. The sugya then turns toward כבד and דם, framing אביי’s question to רב ספרא about cooking liver and whether blood expressed from liver can prohibit other meat in the same pot.
  • Today’s שיעור opens with *ki salik R' Elazar* as ר' אלעזר goes from בבל to ארץ ישראל and meets זעירי, asking איכא תנא דתני ליה לרב כחל and seeking the אמורא who taught רב the דין of כחל. ר' אלעזר is bothered because he knows the version that roasting כחל without cutting it open makes it אסור, yet a ברייתא teaches that if this was done it is מותר. The גמרא identifies רב יצחק בר אבדימי as the source, with רש"י saying דבני המקום pointed him out and the רש"ש saying זעירי pointed him out.
  • Rav יצחק בר אבדימי answers אני לא שניתיו לו כחל כל עיקר, and the ברייתא remains that if one did not cut open the כחל before roasting it, it is מותר. The גמרא explains ורב בקעה מצא וגדר בה גדר, meaning רב found a place where people were not careful in הלכות בשר בחלב and he enacted extra stringency even on an udder roasted without being opened because it looks like בשר בחלב. The incident occurs when דרב איקלע לטטלופש and he hears a woman ask her friend ריבעא דבישרא כמה חלבא בעי לבשולי, leading רב to say לא גמירי דבשר בחלב אסור, to stay, and to prohibit כחלי there as a fence.
  • Rav יוסף בר אבא reports a different response from Rav יצחק בר אבדימי: אנא כחל של מניקה שניתי לו, establishing a distinction between a nursing cow’s udder, which is full of milk and remains אסור בדיעבד if roasted without being cut, and a non-nursing cow’s udder, which is permitted after the fact. Rav יצחק adds that from ומפילפולא של רב חייא שניתי לו כחל סתם, Rav חייא repeated the הלכה without stating the distinction, assuming everyone understands that “כחל is אסור” refers to a מניקה. Rav hears Rav חייא’s undifferentiated phrasing as a total prohibition and chooses to follow Rav חייא because the ברייתות of Rav חייא are the most accurate and authoritative, and therefore רב says כחל is אסור.
  • Ravין and Rav יצחק בר יוסף come to Rav פפא’s house and are served תבשילא דכחלא, with Rav יצחק בר יוסף eating and Ravין not eating. אביי calls him רבין תכלא and challenges him because the dish is served by דביתהו דרב פפא, who is ברתיה דרב יצחק נפחא, and Rav יצחק נפחא is described by רש״י as זהיר במעשים טובים and someone who would not have prepared it without a reliable tradition from her father that it is permitted.
  • The גמרא states בסורא לא אכלי כחלא and explains a spread of stringency that aligns with רב’s teaching, with a possible רש״י גירסא of ששנה להם בבבל שאסור. The גמרא contrasts this with בפומבדיתא אכלי כחלא, where udder is eaten.
  • רמי בר תמרי דהוא רמי בר דיקולי, with מסורת הש״ס offering that he is חמוה דרמי בר דיקולי, comes from פומבדיתא to סורא on מעלי יומא דכיפורי when the residents throw out their udders, and he collects them and eats them. The townspeople bring him before רב חסדא, and he answers that he comes from the place of רב יהודה where they eat udders, and he argues that he ate חוץ לתחומא. He says he roasted the udders בפורצני, is challenged about possible יין נסך, and answers that the pits were לאחר שנים עשר חודש, citing the rule that dry ones are permitted, and he is challenged about possible גזל and answers יאוש בעלים הוה because דקדחו בהו חלפי.
  • Rav חסדא sees that he is not wearing תפילין and he says חולה מעיים הוא, invoking ואמר רב יהודה חולה מעיים פטור מן התפילין. Rav חסדא sees that he has no ציצית on a four-corner garment and he answers טלית שאולה היא and cites ואמר רב יהודה טלית שאולה כל שלשים יום פטור מן הציצית, with תוספות correcting the reference and explaining that מדאורייתא a borrowed garment is פטור and מדרבנן the obligation begins after thirty days. A person who does not honor his parents is brought to be punished, and רמי says שבקוהו based on the ברייתא כל מצוות עשה שמתן שכרה בצדה אין בית דין של מטה מוזהרין עליה, applying it to כיבוד אב ואם with למען יאריכון ימיך.
  • Rav חסדא tells רמי חזינא לך דחריפת טובא, and רמי answers אי הוית באתריה דרב יהודה אחוינא לך חריפותאי. Rav חיים שמואלביץ explains that רמי’s behavior on ערב יום כיפור shows פשוט נבילתא בשוקא ולא תצטריך לבריאתא as the reason he does not ask the אנשי סורא for a meal despite his poverty and illness.
  • The שיעור explains that for other organs, eating raw meat does not violate דם because it is דם איברים שלא פירש, while cooking without removing blood makes it prohibited because the blood separates and returns. The שיעור states that salting or roasting extracts blood for ordinary meat, but כבד contains so much blood that salting does not remove it sufficiently, and cooking a salted liver still leaves דם.
  • אביי asks רב ספרא to inquire in ארץ ישראל about כבדא מה עבדן בה regarding cooking liver and whether blood that comes out becomes prohibited like דם איברים שפירש or remains permitted because the essence of liver is blood that the תורה permits. רב ספרא asks רב זריקא and hears אנא שלקי ליה לרב אמי ואכל. אביי responds that he does not question permissibility of the liver itself because איידי דטריד למיפלט לא בלע, and he clarifies that his question is the blood’s power למאסר חברתה, whether blood from liver can prohibit other meat cooked together with it, and the continuation is left for tomorrow’s שיעור.
