a) One is using all the letters in aleph-beis to praise Hashem. (Except the letter nun)

b) It includes the pasuk of פותח את ידך

Siman -- Door. A massive DOOR at the front of the shul had a big clock on it and when the clock struck midnight it would flash Ashrei three times to remind the minyan to be סומך גאולה לתפילה at Maariv.
